Scuppernong River Workday with SEWTU
February 23rd, 2008
Dear SEWTU Member of Friend:
On Saturday, February 23, 2008, SEWTU will – for the first time in recent memory – work on the Scuppernong River, in the Southern District of the Kettle Moraine. We'll once again be working with our friends from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources' Southern District of the Kettle Moraine station, and hopefully some volunteers from other chapters as well!
We've more than put in our time removing exotic buckthorn and other such species, and now it's time to get into the river.
At this workday, we'll be divided up into two teams. The first will use gravel in order to fill in warm-water entrance points, flowing into the Scuppernong. These entrance points are the remnants of old marl pits, and allow warm water predatory species an opportunity to enter the Scuppernong, and feast on young of the year trout. As such, this gravel work will serve a vital need in that it will ensure the Scuppernong stays cold, and sectioned off from man-made warm water ecosystems.
The second crew will engage itself in installing bio-log fish structures. Bio-logs, made of coconut and other like-kind fibers, are used to create cut-banks. Less bulky, and easier to install than LUNKER structures and other such devices, the cut banks created by bio-logs offer shelter and holding areas for trout populations within the river.
In short, this workday looks to be another chance for SEWTU volunteers and our friends to earn our stripes in the off-season, and will present an opportunity to actually perform in-the-stream habitat improvements and restoration activities.
To get to the site, head south off of I-94 on Highway 67. Take Highway 67 to Highway ZZ. Turn WEST on Highway ZZ, and park approximately 1/4 mile down Highway ZZ, just across from Ottawa Lake.
We'll work 1/2 day as always, starting at 9:00 a.m., and ending around 12:00 noon with a free bratwurst (and other foodstuffs) lunch. Volunteers interested in attending are asked to RSVP to Henry Koltz at hek@sdelaw.com, or by phone at 414-258-4300.
Very truly yours,
Henry E. Koltz
